Big Apple Brits have Royal Wedding Fever!

It's almost here, party people! Royal Wedding fever is upon us on both sides of the pond, and we expats couldn't let the big event pass by unnoticed. On Friday, April 29th 2011 long-time friends of MTG and expat community group extraordinaire Big Apple Brits will present a daylong celebration of the biggest event to hit the royal calendar in years. And when we say daylong, we mean daylong!

Beginning at 5am head on over to DUMBO in Brooklyn to watch Will and Kate tie the knot on a massive screen under the Manhattan Bridge! Big Apple Brits have teamed up with DUMBO Improvement District to provide the screen and a fantastic sound system and will broadcast the happy occasion live for die hards at "obscenely early o' clock", with the whole thing repeated for those of you not on Greenwich Meantime later on in the afternoon. Hundreds of revelers are expected, and these fabulous outdoor activities are completely FREE to attend!

After the ceremony Big Apple Brits will throw a reception for the newlyweds right around the corner at The Dumbo Loft which, in true British fashion, will run into the wee small hours. MTG troupes will be out in force to raise a glass (or three!) to the Prince and Princess and we'd love to see you there.

Spring is Sprung - Under the Blue Sky premiers on May 19th!

As winter in NYC finally seems to be leaving us (we actually saw cherry blossoms this morning!) MTG is gearing up for a busy spring with a little loving Under the Blue Sky. Thanks to an immensely successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year rehearsals are now well under the way for the NYC premier of David Eldridge's award-winning play which opens at The Kraine Theatre in the East Village on Thursday May 19th 2011. First staged at The Royal Court in 2000, Under the Blue Sky centers on six teachers and their various psycho-sexual hang-ups, so it's sure to be a doozy of a show! Here's the info:

Mind The Gap Theatre Participates in Theatre Uncut

Reclaim Productions in association with Meeting Point Productions, supported by Southwark Playhouse presents Theatre Uncut in response to the UK-wide spending cuts affecting the arts. Across the UK thousands of people are involved in protests and debates, sparked into action by the largest cuts to public spending since World War Two. Theatre Uncut is a national theatre event in response to these cuts, bringing together some of the UK’s leading dramatists.

As NYC's premiere British Theatre Company- and as a US company all too familiar with arts cuts in the states - Mind The Gap has a particular interest in showing support for our fellow theatre artists back in the UK and will be presenting readings of the commissioned plays, free of charge on March 19th.

Theatre Uncut’s flagship event will be held at The Vault, Southwark Playhouse UK from 16th March to 19th March 2011. March 19th will see drama groups, universities, youth clubs and theatre companies nationwide join the event, staging their own versions of the shorts in a national theatrical uprising. The events will be linked together through online networking and video conferencing.

Writers for Theatre Uncut include Mark Ravenhill, David Greig, Dennis Kelly, Jack Thorne, Lucy Kirkwood, Laura Lomas, Anders Lustgarten (based on an initial idea by Simon Stephens and Anders Lustgarten), Mark Ravenhill, and Reclaim’s writer in residence, Clara Brennan, all of whom have agreed to donate their work rights free for the duration of the event.

Theatre Uncut in New York is being organised by Mind The Gap Theatre and will take place at:

Under the Blue Sky casting announced!

MTG has confirmed the cast for the NYC premiere of David Eldridge's West End hit Under the Blue Sky running May 19 - June 5, 2011 at the Kraine Theater.

The Cast includes MTG company members Richard Hollis, Elizabeth Jasicki (The New Group's "Abigail's Party"), Sarah Manton (Baby in the West End production of "Dirty Dancing"), Christine Rendel, Victor Villar-Hauser and Stuart Williams.

The play will be directed by Mind The Gap Theatre's Artistic Director/Founder Paula D'Alessandris. Set design will be by Kristin Costa.

Show times are 8pm Thursdays through Saturdays with one Sunday matinee on June 5th at 3pm.

It's official! Mind The Gap is excited to announce the launch of our Kickstarter campaign. In May 2011, we will present the NYC premiere of David Eldridge's award-winning play at The Kraine Theatre and we need you to help us make it happen!

We're a thrifty bunch and can do a lot with a little - we've existed as an entirely volunteer-run organization since 1999 - but we rely on the generosity of friends, family, and supporters - in other words people like you - to help us continue towards our goal of bringing the best of contemporary British Theatre to New York audiences.

As you know, MTG has an affinity for the good old short play - small and perfectly formed with something for everyone, the latest installment of our popular short play festival BritBits 7 played to great acclaim at Manhattan Theatre Source in June when we welcomed some fabulous new British exports/expats into The Company.

But for our Fall production we're taking a break from the short stuff and hope to be able to announce very soon the two full length shows which we will be performing in repertory at The Source in November 2010.

However, in the meantime we have another agenda. Like all off-off-Broadway companies MTG is always looking for new audiences to pack those seats, and that's where you come in. Congratulations to AARC member Camilla Maxwell whose short play Love Thy Neighbour has been selected as part of the 13th Annual Black Box New Play Festival at The Gallery Players in Park Slope, Brooklyn (Director Mike Hayhurst). Love Thy Neighbour will be appearing in the third week of the festival, June 17th - 20th, 2010 and non-union male and female British actors are currently being sought for the following roles:

Anglo-American Repertory Company (AARC) News

In what may be the perfect display of cross-pond collaboration, AARC member Michael Graves will be appearing at Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Triangle (1972 Broadway at 67th St, New York, NY 10023) on Friday, March 26th at 7:30pm to read excerpts from the new book A Yank Back to England by Denis Lipman during its booksigning event.

Pulitzer prize winning author Michael Dirda of the Washington Post has this to say about the book:

Anglo-American Repertory Company (AARC) News

Not content with taking New York City by storm, MTG's AARC Members are getting out and about and performing in/writing for theatre's around the country!

Sarah Manton with be appearing as Maureen in Pittsburgh Public Theatre's production of Alan Bennet's Time of My Life, which runs April 15th - May 16th.

The lovely Bronwen Denton-Davis, MTG contributing playwright extraordinaire and NY Innovative Theatre Award nominee, will be a participating panelist/artist in the International SWAN Forum held in Santa Fe, NM this month. The Support Women Artists Now forum focuses on the work of women in Theatre and the Arts, something that is very close to our hearts here at Mind The Gap! By bringing together theatre professionals, the forum explores the challenges of getting womens works produced and endeavors to provide answers and opportunities for them to be presented, seen and heard.

Bronwen will also be directing her own works in Santa Fe this spring in conjunction with Clearstory Productions, currently titled BDD Briefs, as well as being in the process of completing a commissioned film script and continuing to contribute works to our ever popular BritBits series.

Anglo-American Repertory Company (AARC) News

Members of Mind The Gap Theatre's Anglo-American Repertory Company are keeping busy while we're in between shows.

This just in from a few of our members:

Long time MTG AARC member Mia Moreland will be appearing in a staged reading of Abbie Somma's new play, Beneath the Hush, A Whisper at The WorkShop Theatre March 11 - 13 at 8pm.

Earlier this month, MTG alum Daniel Damiano's play The Narrow World received its successful World Premiere with the Fresh Baked Theatre Company in Los Angeles. He will be appearing as Rev. Hale in Arthur Miller's The Crucible at the Gallery Players Theatre in Park Slope March 20 - April 4.

MTG's favourite SM Lauren Arneson is currently the ASM for the New York Neo-Futurists' The Soup Show at HERE Arts Center. Catch the show March 4-27, Wednesdays - Sundays at 7pm.

In celebration of World Theatre Day, which falls on Saturday March 27th, 2010, Mind The Gap Theatre is taking over the Crooked Knife Bar & Restaurant in Gramercy for the night! This cozy bar/restaurant is located at 29 E. 30th Street (between Park and Madison). More details will be announced in the coming weeks, but for now SAVE THE DATE and plan on joining us for drinks specials ($4 Well drinks and $3 Miller Light), raffles and witty repartee from 7pm!

MTG in SW1

If you happen to find yourself in the motherland in the next few weeks, head on down to the Jermyn Street Theatre in London where Durang Durang is running from February 15th - March 6th. After a successful stint at the Gilded Balloon during this years Edinburgh Festival, Mind The Gap is chuffed to bits that company members Janet Prince and Stuart Williams have moved Off-West End with this "hellishly funny trilogy...like Arrested Development set in some Edward Gorey-inspired locked room" - Metro.

It's been a while since we've blogged here at Mind The Gap, but that's just because we've been so darn busy! 2010 marks a year of big changes and exciting new developments for us, and we're eager to share.

First of all, here's a quick 2 minute recap of how 2009 shaped up for Mind The Gap:

We continued our mission of producing cutting edge British work for New York audiences and fostering an exchange of plays between the US and UK. Our BritBits series had two more successful runs with sell out shows for both BritBits5 & BritBits6! We partnered with the British Memorial Garden and the Welsh Assembly Government on special events and brought back our From Across The Pond series with readings of new British plays, music, stand-up comedy and screenings of short films by up and coming British filmmakers. We had our very own booth at Theatermania's massive street fair, and also strengthened our relationship with Big Apple Brits - the British Expat community in NY - in a new venture for Mind The Gap we began recording the BritBits Online podcast which will soon be featured on Big Apple Brits Radio. Enjoy theatre without ever leaving the comfort of your Snuggie! We made good on our promise to take an American play to the UK with MTG's four-star reviewed production of Durang Durang at the Gilded Balloon, as part of the internationally-acclaimed Edinburgh Festival (keep reading for more on Durang Durang). We partnered with Manhattan Theatre Source on their Guy Fawkes/Bonfire night fundraiser. We slept accasionally. We've been busy.

And as for what's happening in 2010...

We've just launched our shiny new website, which we hope is more user friendly and reflects all the social networks MTG is a part of. Check it out here and let us know what you think.
We're thrilled to announce that MTG has been offered a permanent home! We are now happily ensconsed as a resident company at our favourite NYC venue, Manhattan Theatre Source in the West Village. If you've never been there, it's a really lovely space and we encourage you to stop by and say hello if you're in the neighbourhood. There's always something going on there, and we are very excited to be a part of The Source family.
We're currently in the planning stages for our 2010 season, which will include more BritBits than you ever thought humanly possible, as well as a longer run of a fabulous full length play (TBD). Watch this space, which we promise will be updated frequently!

BritBits 5 is just around the corner- April 26-28 actually. So MTG's crack team of literary divas are rolling up their sleeves and getting to the business of reading this crop of submissions.

If you are a NATIVE British/Irish/Scottish/Welsh and would like to submit your SHORT play (1-15 pages) you can do so now. Just send it to allaboard@mindthegaptheatre.com with a brief playwright bio and your contact info.

We regret we can only contact playwrights whose work we are interested in producing for this round of shows but we will respond to each submission with an email so you know it has been received.
